The University was founded and
established by Royal Charter in 1900 to train and
educate the people who would create and manage the
burgeoning business and industries of the English
midlands.
Today, the University is well
established as a world-class university, drawing staff
and students from around the globe to its attractive and
spacious campuses at Edgbaston and Selly Oak, just south
of Birmingham city centre.
The University is an institution of
national and international research excellence,
evidenced by its performance in the most recent research
assessment exercise: it was ranked fifth based on those
who have gained the most grade 4, 5 and 5* rankings of
their units of assessment. 12 of those units were ranked
as 5* (the top rating) in 2001, from across the range of
the University’s broad base of disciplines; and four of
them – Anatomy, Metallurgy and Materials, West African
Studies and Russian and East European Studies – have now
been identified as so called 6* departments. Under
current HEFCE proposals the definition of 6* departments
will change from 2004-05, and the University would
expect that Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Chemical
Engineering and Sport and Exercise Sciences would then
also be designated as 6* departments. Interdisciplinary
collaborative research, transcending the traditional
boundaries, is a particular strength of the research
culture.

environment at the forefront of the development of
knowledge. High quality students from a wide range of
social backgrounds and cultures, and from as many as 150
different countries worldwide choose to study here:
