More job cuts expected, study shows

More job cuts are expected, research by information firm XpertHR has revealed.

The company's survey of almost 300 employers found that three-quarters expected to make additional redundancies.

"Things are changing with unprecedented speed in the economy and organisations need to respond just as quickly," said the report's author, Noelle Murphy.

More than 50 per cent of respondents revealed they had asked for volunteers, stopped recruiting and redeployed workers.

However, Ms Murphy noted that it was encouraging to see that employers were "looking at ways to minimise compulsory job losses".

This, she said, would without doubt limit "the negative impact on remaining or surviving employees".
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has noted it expects more job losses to follow.

"Firms are steeling themselves for a very difficult few months with output and orders expected to fall at a record pace in the next quarter," commented CBI chairman, Russell Griggs.
