Civil servants face efficiency drive
22/04/2009

Workers in the civil service could be forced out of work if the government looks for more savings, the Times has reported.
Today's so-called 'Budget for Jobs' will reveal extra funding for training programmes, however the chancellor Alistair Darling will also be looking to save money by cutting government staff.
According to the paper, Mr Darling's advisers have suggested savings of £5 billion should be found in the first year, rising to £15 billion in 2013/14 - which could put civil service jobs on the line.
Details of possible savings were published yesterday, which showed it would be possible to cut billions of pounds by "streamlining back office functions" and cutting IT spending.
Martin Read, former chief executive officer at IT services provider Logica, is conducting the government's Operational Efficiency Programme review.
He told the Financial Times that 7.2 billion could be saved, however "only a minority" of the cost-cutting measures have been agreed on.
