ICAEW urges accountant action over new report

14/12/2007

All members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) are being urged to engage more closely with the business community in order to help it deliver on sustainability obligations.

The appeal comes alongside a new report from the Prince of Wales' Accounting for Sustainability project which introduces a number of new resources intended to help companies report and embed sustainability.

The Prince of Wales' Accounting for Sustainability project was set up in December 2006 and has the stated goal of creating a model of integrated sustainability that businesses can work into their corporate structure.

Michael Izza, chief executive of the ICAEW, said that the role of accountants has changed over the past few years and there is now growing awareness among senior figures about the importance of sustainability on business.

He added: "It is now time, if they haven't already done so, for accountants to take the lead not just in the reporting of sustainability initiatives but also on the more fundamental task of embedding it into corporate cultures."

Former ICAEW president Paul Druckman chaired the Sustainability project and Robert Hodgkinson, executive technical director at the ICAEW, is a member of the project's steering committee.ADNFCR-1196-ID-18395352-ADNFCR
