Campaign stepped up to ban unqualified accountants
24/12/2007
Trained accountants could be given better job opportunities after a campaign is being stepped up to stop unqualified people calling themselves accountants, it has been reported.
A survey by the ICAS found that many people are concerned about unqualified accountants compiling tax returns or preparing company accounts, according to Scottish newspaper The Herald.
ICAS chief executive Anton Colella said: "At the moment, anybody can set themselves up as an accountant without any training or any PII.
"You can pay a price in incomplete tax returns, or poorly prepared accounts can affect funding decisions from investors. There is no protection for the public."
It is hoped that the campaign will force the government to pass a law which states that only those with qualifications will be able to call themselves 'accountants'.
ICAS also pushed for the term accountant to be recognised and restricted earlier this year.
