Accountancy jobs 'at risk'

04/01/2008

Concerns have been raised that changes to the way accountancy vacancies are advertised could see British accountants lose out to foreign workers.

According to the Daily Mail, amendments to the Resident Labour Market Test will mean that employers will no longer have to offer jobs to UK workers before they advertise outside the EU.

Currently, British firms must advertise within the UK for a number of weeks before being allowed to try to fill the post abroad.

But according to the latest reports, proposals have been made to scrap the test for any accountancy jobs which offer salaries of more than £40,000.

This, according to the newspaper, is likely to have a major impact on legal jobs and accountancy jobs.

Conservative MP, James Clappison, said: "This plan allows employers to bypass British workers. The question the government must answer is, how does this help British workers to get British jobs?"ADNFCR-1196-ID-18414094-ADNFCR
