Credit history 'could hamper grad job outlook'
01/02/2008
Graduates have been urged to ensure a clear credit history as a poor credit rating could affect their job prospects, according to Equifax.
For those wanting to pursue a career in the finance sector, such as accountancy and investment banking, a flawless credit history may be as important as impressive CV credentials.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, warned: "There may be some jobs which are financially based or have other sensitivities, where an employer may ask you if you can check your credit file.
"If you're going into a position where there's finance involved, it would probably seem appropriate that the employer checks your credit history."
Current estimates state that a typical undergraduate entering university this year could graduate in 2010 carrying a debt burden of around £30,000. During a three year course a typical student can expect to spend between £39,000 and £45,000.
A recent survey of NUS members revealed that just under a quarter of students do not know how much they have spent until they receive their monthly bank and credit card statements.
