Discrimination "still exists" in workplace
08/05/2008
Discrimination still exists in the workplace according to legal jobs advisor, the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA).
It secretary, Richard Linskell, said there is still a lot that needs to be done to make work a more equal environment.
"There is still a lot of discrimination in the work place, despite the fact that many organisations do have policies in place to prevent discrimination," he said.
The ELA represents the views and interests of over 4,700 specialist, qualified employment lawyers in the UK. It recently revealed women were still sometimes discriminated against as bosses thought they were likely to fall pregnant.
Mr Linskill said these discriminatory practices were clearly outdated. "Sex and race discrimination law has been in place now for over 30 years," he noted "and whilst there has been significant progress over that time, there is also no doubt that there is still a lot of progress required."
Several firms have now introduced paternity leave, during which fathers can help raise their children.
