Civil Service launches diversity initiative

18/07/2008

The Civil Service has launched a new diversity initiative to better promote equality within its ranks.

Its new strategy, Promoting equality, valuing diversity, hopes to change culture and behaviors, hold heads of departments accountable and recruit talented people from diverse backgrounds.

"I want the Civil Service to lead the way, among employers, in the way we value our people, invest in their development and create an inclusive culture," said its boss, Sir Gus O'Donnell.

"We have made significant progress in this field and our workforce is now more diverse than ever but we must not be complacent."

It also hopes to establish its longer-term aspirations through a series of service-wide targets.

The Ministry of Defence has supported the scheme, its permanent secretary, Sir Bill Jeffrey said government should "turn our commitments on diversity into actions that make a real difference to all staff".
